Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE)

 

This evaluation is a detailed report of a person's ability to perform their work for 8 hours a day in a competitive job environment.  The report should be objective and not speculative.  The Center for Work Rehabilitation at the Fontana Center accomplishes this by:

 

  • Using real work activities
  • Evaluating in a real work environment
  • Evaluating the person 8 hours per day for 2 to 5 days in succession
  • Utilizing cross checks

 

Testing in this manner also allows the Occupational Therapist the opportunity to have the client participate in a variety of different activities where the client is unaware of what the clinician is seeking to determine. These cross checks are critical in confirming or denying Symptom Magnification.

 

The benefits of performing Functional Capacity Evaluations in this manner are:

 

  • The absence or presence of Symptom Magnification will be clearly and objectively stated.
  • This evaluation along with a proper job description eliminates all speculation as to whether or not a person is able to return to their position.
  • Decisions regarding accommodating an employee are simplified
